Hurricane season is pretty exciting in the Dominican Republic. The island is perfectly situated for storms to swerve either north or south of us; Passing by right now is Hurricane Bill, Cat 3 and like most storms, well north of us (Cabarete in the north is even more fortunate as storms are ‘bounced away’ by the mountain ranges that separate the south and north of the island).
The season is exciting as right now, we have a HUGE swell that Bill is making; the waves on the reef are 10′ + and even the shore break was littered with surfers this afternoon at 6′+
A little rain and a lot of cloud was the worst we faced; fearless Dominicans take to the water in their droves when the conditions are extraordinary – nothing gets their heart pumping like a little danger from the huge breaking waves; it’s so entertaining to watch.
