Surfing Cabarete
Not many people think of the Dominican Republic as a top surfing destination and that's not a bad thing; it keeps the numbers in the water down, which means more space and more waves for those who come here for an epic surf holiday.
The main surfing spot close to Cabarete is Playa Encuentro, which is a 5 minute ride west of town with our transport. The main advantage of Encuentro is that it is one of the most consistent surf spots in the Caribbean. It picks up all the summer east swells and then really goes off on North swells that arrive for the Winter months.
Encuentro has a few distinct surf peaks:
The main surf peak at Encuentro has both a long easy right-hand wave and a shorter, but more intense left. At this peak, there's a surfable wave 365 days a year and is suitable for surfers of all levels.
The left at Encuentro works best in a swell with a bit of North in it.
It's not suitable for beginners and even intermediates need to be careful here since it's pretty shallow at times and has more of a punch to it than the main surf peak. In the right conditions, this wave has long hollow walls.
Cocopipe, found at the entrance of Encuentro is another spot that is not suitable for beginners. Cocopipe starts breaking when the swells get over 1.5 overhead and when it does, it's a quality right-hander with barrel sections.
East of Cabarete are a few beach breaks that work well in summer East swells, these require early starts as they don't handlle any wind over 10 knots.
45 minutes east of Cabarete is Rio San Juan with the gorgeous beach of Playa Grande and the surf spots Preciosa and El Barco next to it.
Playa Grande is a huge white sandy beach with a good beach break, also nice for sun bathing and eating delicious grilled fish, whilst sipping Pina Colada from a freshly hollowed coconut in the shade of the palm trees.
La Preciosa is a magnificant surf spot that on the right day that can rival any surf spot in the world.
Good left and right hand walls with barrels and plenty of juice. Not for beginners or people who are not very fit, since it's a bit of a paddle. Great spot to watch the action from the steep cliffs overlooking the surf.
El Barco is a solid right hander next to Preciosa which needs a bit of north in the swell to work it's magic.
How about secret spots?
Now that would be telling wouldn't it?
Yes, we know plenty of good, uncrowded 'secret' spots where you can surf with only 1-2 people and get all the waves that you want.
Lefts , rights, barrels or slow walls, we know where and when to find them.
As long as you can keep a secret and it suits your ability, we might take you there.
