why swell

We understand you want to make sure that you choose the right vacation for your precious time off.
We also know that Swell is not the only surf holiday provider out there, but we are convinced that there are a number of things that set Swell apart from any other surf camp holiday/surf vacation.

Swell is the only purpose-built surf camp in the Caribbean; it’s actually one of the only purpose-built surf hotels in the world. We didn’t just convert a villa or other building into a hotel. Instead, we started from scratch, with an award winning architect, to create the ultimate place for surfers to stay at. We based it entirely on what we look for ourselves in a place to stay when we are surfing.
Comfortable, stylish, social and spotlessly clean!

Not too big, not too small; creates the perfect, social place to stay.

Gone are the days when, just because you are a surfer, you are automatically linked with below-par acommodation; everything on the cheap. Our place was born of travelling and surfing and finding it difficult to get a nice place to stay, close to the surf

Surf at one of the Caribbean’s prettiest and most consistent surf spots.

Our surfing beach is still unspoiled. With a sandy beach and a reef break, it’s all set in front of a palm-tree-lined tropical area with just a few charming shacks for board rental and storage: There’s no high-rise here.

Small groups, divided by skill level, means safe and quick progress.

Lessons are taught in English with qualified instructors. Surf theory and pool-paddle lessons are also part of the course. We even give you a warm-up course so you can come fully prepared for your surf vacation.

70% of our clients travel to Swell solo, which means it’s a great place to meet other like minded people!

You may arrive alone at our surf camp, but the moment you step through the door, you will be amongst friends.  It’s a fact that at Swell, you are just as likely to be greeted by a fellow guest when you enter, as by one of our own staff.  Communal meals, games of pool, Jenga (and countless others), going out for dinners together, canyoning as a group; it all happens at Swell.

Sleep (S)Well

Comfortable and stylish rooms with AC, Ensuite Bathroom and Pool view means you will sleep well

Our beds are beautifully comfortable and you can choose a California-king or twin beds. We only use quality sheets and towels. Rooms are decorated to feel restful and calming. Private rooms have A/C fitted as standard and all over look the pool. Shared rooms sleep four guests and have an en-suite and ceiling fan.

Canyoning, snorkeling, visit remote beaches, we can organize all those trips

The scenery here is spectacular; a mountainous country with canyons, caves and rivers.  Go on a spectacular canyoning day trip, or ride horses through the countryside and rivers, or along our sandy beaches.  Snorkelling, diving, kiteboarding, kayaking or visiting parts of the Dominican Republic’s colonial past; it’s all on offer and we will organise it for you.

Leave your wetsuit at home

Warm water year-round and clear blue sea. You’ll surf in board shorts or bikinis. We don’t even have a wet season!
No sharks, crocodiles or anything dangerous in the water either, just good vibes!

Daily healthy breakfasts after the surfing and 3 dinners per week

All our meals are home made, using the freshest, organic ingredients from local producers.  Guests have often asked us for our recipes and yes, we can cater for you if you are vegetarian, vegan or need gluten-free options.

The Dominican Republic is a stunning country: mountain ranges, empty beaches, local culture. There’s a reason the saying is:
“The Dominican Republic has it all”

Come and visit our unique place for an unforgettable vacation. Our Swell promise is to treat you so well, you will want to come back.

What our clients say

surf camp reviews
“I have been to a fair few other surf camps before; Costa Rica, Nicaragua and Panama, but none of those places were as awesome as Swell. The owners and manager Haudy have thought of everything and will go to great lengths to make sure you have the best holiday.
Thank you Swell, I’ll be back soon”

I spent a month in the Dominican Republic and some of my fondest memories are of my two weeks at Swell Surf camp. The management was great (Haudy), the surf instruction was awesome, and the Breakfast and Dinners were top notch. The establishment is very clean and well maintained. On my first day surfing I re-aggravated an old injury and I was in pretty bad shape. Haudy came through for me. She did all she could to comfort me and put me in the right direction to get the proper care which allowed me get back out in the water. I really appreciated that and it’s something I won’t forget. She’s truly amazing and a real asset to this establishment as is everyone else. You all surpassed all expectations in every category and I’m definitely returning in the future. Thanks for the great experience!

After the disaster of a year that 2020 was I made a promise to myself to make the most of 2021. Learning to surf had always been one of my dreams, and I could not have gone to a better place.
The Surf instructors are fantastic: patient, kind and knowledgeable.
The food at Swell is super tasty, but what made the holiday so extra special was the friendly social vibe between guests and Swell staff. I will be coming back and recommending Swell to friends.

Swell surf camp was such a great experience, I have always wanted to learn to surf and the instructors at Swell were spot on! Samuel, Jeffry and Neno gave great lessons and all the best tips to progress through my week long stay.
Claire was excellent in giving us all the information we needed and organising the perfect package for us and Haudy was such a fabulous manager once we arrived.
The surf camp has such a rad vibe where you can all socialise together and enjoy hanging out, play pool, have a swim in the pool and lounge about.
I look forward to coming back and have such great memories of my trip

The Swell Team is amazing! In 7 days they successfully taught me how to surf. We had an absolutely wonderful time. My husband and I were traveling together and enjoyed the camaraderie and community that swell offers. The accommodations were perfect and the food was amazing! I have a gluten allergy and the chefs were so kind to always have options for me at each meal. Everything is planned for you the moment you arrive and you can truly relax and enjoy your vacation. I would give them ten stars if I could. Highly recommend Swell Surf Camp

  • “Think of Swell as the anti-surf camp. There’s plenty of surfing, of course, but the similarities to other surf camps end there. For starters, the rooms are stylish — more boutique surf retreat than reggae-loving surfer digs. Then there are the legendary breakfasts (omelets, pancakes and crepes, fresh-squeezed orange juice, and fruit bowls). Structured surf lessons take place each morning, with an instructor alongside you and the head surf coach watching from shallow water, ready to offer learn to surf tips between riding waves. If you are serious about learning to surf, then Swell should be on top of your destination list. Highly recommended!

Designed with the discerning surfer in mind, Swell is far from a crash pad. The spare clean lines, plush bedding, modern photographs and funky furniture say ‘boutique surf retreat’ but the pool, ping-pong and foosball tables and social vibe suggest otherwise. A huge wood communal table is the center of the hanging-out action, after all the surfing is done. Highly recommended!
