SOME QUICK QUESTIONS
CAN I STAY LONGER / SHORTER THAN 7 DAYS?
Staying longer at a Swell Surf Vacation is not a problem, we get a lot of returning clients that do not like the cold weather in their home countries during the winter, and stay at Swell Surf Camp for several weeks.
Even during our wintertime, you do not ever have to wear a wetsuit, the water is warm, and leave your warm clothes at home too, just bring plenty of sunscreen.
Staying shorter is also possible, although the minimum stay most of the year is 4 nights. At Swell we do not have a set arrival date, so see what flights are available, send us a message and join us for a surf holiday with like-minded adults.
I HAVE DIETARY RESTRICTIONS
Whilst we do not have a team of chefs to cater to every whim, we are well used to catering for vegetarians, vegans and people with other food intolerances. We have a wide variety of ingredients to choose from and will always try our very best to cater for your needs if you tell us in advance, so just send us an email to see what your options are.
IS THIS A WOMAN SURF & YOGA RETREAT
No, at Swell we are open to all; men and woman are welcome to join us for a unique Caribbean Retreat
HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?
On our pricing pages you can see the different surf retreat packages we offer, there are 3 ‘main’ packages: learn to surf, learn to wingfoil or learn to kitesurf. You can also combine packages or customize them with your needs and lenght of stay, just send us a message. Please note that a Swell Retreat can only be booked directly with us, we do not offer our rooms or packages on any external site .
WHAT OUR CLIENTS SAY
Well, I got there and within a couple days, I was actually surfing and I couldn’t imagine not going every day. The staff and surf instructors were so stoked about surfing, I couldn’t help but be stoked too. The instructors were excellent and patient and nice.
The food they cook for you is all really delicious. The referrals they had for restaurants and other activities were great. All the people working at Swell were very very nice. Everyone we encountered in connection with Swell was super nice and lovely. The location isn’t on the beach but I thought that was a positive because it was probably quieter. Highly recommend doing the yoga as well.
WHAT MAKES SWELL DIFFERENT?
WHY IS THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC A TOP SURF DESTINATION?
Before we started Swell in the Caribbean in 2009 we operated a surf travel agency and that gave us the chance to visit over 25+ surf destinations to see what the surf conditions were like, so we have a pretty good idea of the different surfing conditions in the various surf locations around the world.
But first, we need to have a look at what makes a good or best surf destination.
There is no such thing as one surf destination that ticks all the boxes. For one, someone who is in the early stages of their surf career is looking for a very different type of wave than a seasoned pro.
BEST SURF CAMP DESTINATION FOR BEGINNERS LEARNING TO SURF
WHERE IS IT LOCATED: Largest island In the Caribbean, the North coast faces the Atlantic, and the south coast faces the Caribbean.
GETTING THERE: Short direct flight from Miami or 3-hour flight from New York and Toronto. Charter flights from Europe
FOCUS SURF REGION: The north coast, 20 minutes from Puerto Plata international airport.
LEARN TO SURF IN THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC
WHAT MAKES IT A GREAT SURF DESTINATION FOR BEGINNERS:
We are biased since this is where we opened Swell in 2009, but we did so for a reason: we wanted a place where we can teach people to surf in a safe way.
Playa Encuentro is the ideal spot, it has 350 surfable days in the year, with mellow reform waves on the inside breaking over a flat reef, deep enough to stand in the water (around chest high), easy access to the beach, no dangerous current or sea life. We have taught 5000+ guests over 10 years the sport of surfing.
There is no dangerous sea life present, nor are there dangerous rips or currents present. All this makes it one of the best places for a learn to surf camp for beginners.
BEST TIME TO GO: any time of the year
- Pretty white sand beaches, lined with palm trees.
- Friendly Caribbean vibes, in and out of the water.
- Close to an international airport
- Warm tropical climate and water
5 REASONS WHY SWELL IS PERFECT FOR SOLO TRAVELERS
When the idea of opening a surf camp started in 2009, we didn’t want to convert an existing villa into a surf camp; We started from zero with the help of an architect.
So we designed a large communal area, which is the heart of our place.
This is where we have breakfast, and dinners, socialise after surfing and chill out during the day.
Here are the reasons why Swell is so ideal for solo travelers:
- Easy to meet people, the communal area is where people hang out, (not in their rooms)
- 70% of our guests travel solo.
- The town we are in, is full of active people, co-working, surfing, foiling, sailing, enjoying the good Caribbean way of life.
- We organize active day trips that most of our guests sign up for.
- Our staff has lived in the town for over 15 years so are great for tips on where to eat, drink, dance etc.
That’s why our slogan is: arrive as a guest, leave as a friend!
