Best surf camp I’ve been too
If I could give Swell 10 stars I would!! My partner and I visited Swell at the end of March 2026. We had an absolutely amazing trip. The rooms are clean and spaceship. The A/C works great and had warm water to shower. The WiFi is spotty in the upstairs rooms but works perfectly in the downstairs communal room. The staff is above & beyond!! The meals were some of the best I’ve had. The surf instructors are phenomenal.. they work with your experience and levels of surfing and join you for breakfast & dinner nights. The yoga is great mostly long holds and stretches which are great after 2 sessions of surfing. Haudy is the best. She runs the place and without her Swell wouldn’t be Swell. I highly recommend doing the canyon tour with Helmut. And last but not least the people that I stayed there with honestly became my family for the week. I honestly want to come back!

What an awesome place
I look forward to going back. Everyone was super nice and went the extra mile to make our stay incredible. This experience has me shopping for a surfboard, lol. All the food was fantastic. We always felt safe. Do the canyoning trip, it’s well worth it. I loved this place.

Swell is amazing - BOOK YOUR TRIP!!
I am recently home from a 10 day solo adventure at Swell and I can honestly say it was an incredible experience. From the airport pick-up where you are met with a hand drawn sign with your name and "Welcome to Swell" to the airport drop off you will be in the best of hands. The instructors kept me motivated to reach my goals & celebrated my surfing victories! They are energetic, safe, fun(ny), and easily work with all levels and abilities. The food is outrageously delicious - killer breakfasts every morning - you will have a hearty appetite after 2 hours of surfing! The staff is gracious, friendly, and always helpful. The rooms are clean and provide just the right amenities. Cabarete is a fun, vibrant eclectic mixture of athletic/water sport enthusiasts and vacationers. You will explore and push your boundaries and meet interesting and like-minded people from around the globe. You get your surf on in the morning and then enjoy the mellow, loungy, relaxing, cooool. THE SWELL VIBE IS SUBLIME

A Phenomenal Experience
I almost passed on Swell. The website suggests it caters to novice surfers - which it does - and having surfed around the globe for 40+ years, I feared it might offer a watered down version of a surf trip. But after confirming with Clare that I could hitch a ride to the beach with the other Swell guests (who were all taking lessons) but surf on my own, I took a chance. And after spending 11 nights at Swell over Christmas and new year, I’m so glad I did. The Swell staff, starting with manager Haudy, are all amazing people. Kind, welcoming and helpful. The property feels larger than it is with gorgeous tropical landscaping and a central pool. The dining/lounge area is perfect for encouraging conversation and laughs amongst guests. The food is outstanding and the rooms are perfectly comfortable, especially for a solo traveler. Visitors to Swell - which include folks from many different countries - quickly become friends. The surf was legit. Almost everyday was head high plus and Coco Pipe at that size is a serious wave…. Racy lefts and rights. Winds and conditions weren’t always perfect but that’s surf travel. The good days were really good. Highly recommend Swell!!

Great surf holiday
Everything was exactly ( or better) as described on the Swell website. Great food, staff and accommodation. The Atmosphere with the other guests was super friendly.

Great solo trip to learn to surf!
Such a great experience! Loved my stay here as a solo trip to learn to surf. Was easy to connect with others since you’re surfing together and having breakfast together. Dinner is served at the camp 3x/week too. The camp food was super tasty. We had a morning surf session, came back for breakfast, went back out for a mid-morning second session each day. Instructors Luciano and Daniel were fantastic, lots of individual attention and helpful feedback. When you’re not surfing the camp can organize other excursions for you, you can take a short walk to the kite surfing beach and hit restaurants and bars on the beach, or just relax by the pool at the resort. Overall a 5 out of 5 experience!!! Will try to come back next year for kite surfing.

All members of the Swell team combine to make for an engaging, fulfilling experience. Great place for new surfers. A little less consistent for experienced surfers than the waves in Costa Rica. The town is vibrant and easily walkable. Great supermarket on the corner. The highlight for us, was the group of people we ended sharing our stay with. The communal dining was new for us. Food is outstanding both in-house and nearby. Highly recommended.
The facility is spotless. The entire staff is amazing. The breakfasts and dinners provided are delicious. The surfing instruction is top notch. The yoga is restorative. The location is safe. It’s close to local neighborhoods. Restaurants are near by. The main center of Cabarate is a short walk away. Access to Cabarate beach is across the street. Daily transportation to Encuentro beach for surfing instruction is provided. Airport transfers provided were on time and efficient. At sixty years old I had never surfed and always wanted to. The videos speak for themselves. 🏄♂️✌️👍

A rare find; a place that does exactly what it promises!
Swell surf camp is an absolute gem. I'm so glad that saw an Ad pop up for this place as the Dominican Republic had never been on my radar for a surf trip. I'm an 'out of shape' workaholic but had wanted to learn to surf for many years (until now, I'd not been able to find time). I'm also a little bit older than I'd like to be, but that did not stop me having an absolute blast at the camp with the other guests. I guess that the fact everyone is there to do the same thing (or things) means that ages are levelled up and I never felt younger on vacation. Haudy runs a tight ship and makes sure that everyone has everything they need. She's in charge of the awesome food (it's mouthwatering, every meal) and is arranging guests' trips outside of surf time. My surf lessons were awesome with Luciano and the team (and they had their work cut out with me, let me tell you!). They managed to make the surf lessons really fun as well as rewarding. Goodness, I slept well at night! I even tried a couple of hours of wingfoiling, which was so fun, but I left it too late (I'd already been at Swell for 5 days when I took a couple of hours because another guest was learning and doing great). I'm going back again asap to learn wing foiling in the afternoon and carry on with the surfing where I left off. I don't write many reviews, but this place was worth the time. Thnx.
Stunning little oasis in the heart of a great surf and kitesurf town. Haudi and Luciano were absolutely excellent and made me, a 34 year old beginner surfer, feel welcome and sometimes even cool… Really friendly atmosphere around the camp, and a great social atmosphere amongst guests! Rooms were also spotless. Thanks so much everyone!
Superb surf holiday
I had a great time! The lessons from the surf team were great, my surfing improved tremendously. The facilities at Swell are top notch: comfortable rooms, spacious communal areas and most of all the friendliness of the entire swell staff. I am already planning my next trip back to Swell,
September 2024
Highly recommend a stay here. The space is beautiful, clean, comfortable, and the staff were welcoming and helpful. The surf instructors in particular stood out as highly experienced and patient teachers, as well as super kind! Hope we'll be back.
Outstanding experience!
I recently returned home after spending an unforgettable week at Swell Camp in Cabarete, and I’m thrilled to share my experience! From the moment I arrived, the Swell Camp team made me feel incredibly welcome and at home. Haudy was an exceptional host, setting a warm and friendly tone for the entire stay. Luciano’s deep knowledge of surfing and his ability to uplift and encourage were truly remarkable. Special shoutouts to surfing coaches Izzy and Eddie – they are simply amazing! Their passion for surfing, combined with their impressive work ethic, made every session both inspiring and enjoyable. They’re like water gurus, perfectly suited for their roles. I thoroughly enjoyed the yoga classes with Izzy, as well as the theory sessions and video analysis. These elements were incredibly informative and essential for my learning and improvement. The entire Swell Camp experience was made even more memorable thanks to the dedication of my surf instructors. I’ve been raving about Swell Camp to everyone I know and can’t wait to return. If you’re looking for a fantastic surf camp with a phenomenal team, look no further! Thank you, Team Swell, for an outstanding experience!

Very recommended!!! Great !
All the staff is great , very kind, friendly and always helpful and ready to find a good solution. Haudy always available present and so kind. The cookers so adorables and the food always fresh and so so good ! All the staff for cleaning and safety, always present and kind. The rooms always well cleaned and always with fresh towels, perfect. The surf staff : great ! The taxi driver Michel , so kind and at the time and always available! Luciano and the others the same ! Very friendly and professional with lots of experience! Izzy and Eddie spent so much time with me giving always good advices and help me in the water . Very professionals and kind really. I found the videos analysis so interesting and so well done ! Really really useful if you want to improve yours skills.. and also nice to see at the end of the day ( enjoying your progress) Everything analysed , like a professional surfer ! Wow ! So much tips and feedbacks ! The yoga class with Izzy are perfects after surfing.. so well done and well programmed . Honestly I have been in lots of surf camp around the world ( portugal , France , Fuerteventura , Marocco , Bali ) and Izzy et Eddy and all the staff are really really motivated to do everything very well and “at the top “! motivated and professionals and so so friendly at the same time !! I really appreciate that . So thank you very much and I will come back for sure and recommend the Swell .
What a great SURFcation I had at Swell!
The surf camp was better than I imagined! Coaches Luciano, Henry, Izzy, and Eddie are a great team! They're all soo friendly, supportive and were invested in our learning! I loved that rash guard shirts and reef booties were provided (without which I would have certainly fell victim to a sea urchin!). And the video analysis was an awesome and modern touch! Eddy provided voice over analysis to many of the waves I caught, and even included outlines and diagrams over the video to show proper form & technique (AWESOME)! It's safe to say the surf camp is comprehensive! As a beginner I felt I really learned a lot and surpassed what I had hoped to accomplish in the 1 week stay! The property is beautiful and clean, the pool is perfect and gives a nice oasis feeling with the beautiful surrounding greenery that is obviously well maintained. The food was always delicious, and the cooks were sweet and made sure I got my fill every meal! A warm and heartfelt thank you to Haudy, the staff, and the coaches for all being so friendly and hardworking! I cannot wait to return to Swell DR to continue working on my surfing!🤙🏽
Best Surf trip Ever
I'll keep it short: this was the best surf trip I have ever been on. Great food, nice rooms and the most helpful & friendly staff one could wish for.
July 2024
Just spent a week at Swell Surf Camp. I have to start with how nice and accommodating the staff was. Great friendly service. The surf instructors were a good bunch of guys with tons of patience. Funny too. I wanted to go somewhere where I could practice surfing every day consistently and I was able to do so here. This time of year, May - June, the waves are not very big but it is pretty much what I wanted. The only recommendation I can make, especially to the solo traveler, is that you need to bring something to keep yourself entertained. After you are done surfing, usually around noon, if you are not involved with any of the afternoon excursions, the days can get long. There are places to go and checkout within walking distance but not a whole lot. Thank you to everyone that made this such a wonderful experience for me. I hope you enjoy your surfing adventure.
My friend and I spent 5 nights at Swell. The staff were great and the food served there was amazing. The rooms were very clean, and the in room AC units kept them very comfortable. All the surf gear was provided. A big bonus was that everyone goes to the same surf spot which provided a good whitewater section as well as a good section beyond the break. I’ve been to places where they separate people at different breaks depending on ability which can make going on a group trip difficult.
We had a truly great time at Swell! We were a couple but most people were singles. The rooms were clean and comfortable. Food was excellent and plenty of it. And the instructors were awesome. Thanks guys!
i stayed here a while back and still find myself talking about how amazing it was. the food was SOOOO GOOD and surf was fun. the team working there was really what made it stand out though, really kind people :)
Best trip ever! This experience had a personal touch to it you cannot find anywhere else. This was the perfect place to spend a birthday, and I will for sure return with more friends. Great experience that left me wanting more. The staff from instructors, housekeeping, cooks, all the way to security do a great job! This is a one-of-a-kind experience and I highly recommend giving it a try.
The highest of compliments to the entire Swell Surf Camp Team. Highly recommended – beautiful location, knowledgeable instructors, amazing meals!
I visited Swell as a solo traveller while remote working and had a wonderful time. I had never surfed before and all of their instructors were informative, patient and fun. The camp itself is clean, a great place to relax and wifi is strong enough to work remotely (although its better in the communal areas over the rooms). The rooms are clean and comfortable. The group dinners and daily breakfasts were all delicious. The location is great because you're both near the town of Cabarate, and then just a short taxi away from the surf beach (which Swell provides with lessons/rental twice a day). Highly recommend.
My husband and I spent 7 or 8 days at Swell. I went into the week thinking that I hated surfing and was mostly going because my husband was super excited about it. I loaded up on books and figured I’d work remotely. Well, I got there and within a couple days, I was actually surfing and I couldn’t imagine not going every day. The staff and surf instructors were so stoked about surfing, I couldn’t help but be stoked too. The instructors were excellent and patient and nice. The food they cook for you is all really delicious. The referrals they had for restaurants and other activities were great. All the people working at Swell were very very nice. Everyone we encountered in connection with Swell was super nice and lovely. The location isn’t on the beach but I thought that was a positive because it was probably quieter. Highly recommend doing the yoga as well.
Great crew helping to everyone get their merit badge in surfing basics. DR is a friendly place.
Look no further this is a spectacular surf camp! Great location and the rooms look just like the photos - tidy, comfy beds, showers work well. But what makes this place spectacular is the staff. Everyone is warm and welcoming and I felt right at home as a solo traveller. The meals were delicious. I’ve taken surf lessons all over the world and Luciano is by far and away the best instructor I’ve had. As opposed to the supervised chaos I’ve experienced in the past - he has actual lesson plans and goals for each session so you have measurable progress. Jeffrey is also great. I felt safe and confident - and above all had a lot of fun. Hats off to Haudy the host who organizes everything seamlessly. Thanks everyone for making my first solo surf trip so fantastic. See you again soon!
Amazing boutique hotel with Incredible instructors. The pictures online look exactly like the place. Every staff member has been so kind, helpful, pleasant & a joy to be around. My surfing abilities have grown exponentially even in just a week. It has been a dream vacation, am so grateful for this experience, & have learned so much.
Loved the camp and people working there. Everyone was very friendly and genuinely cared for you having a great time. The accommodations are smartly designed and well run so you have everything you need and more. Clean, thoughtful and beautiful. The food was always fresh and delicious. The camp manager Haudy was so welcoming that I've got a feeling as I am visiting my extended family :). Learning surfing was of course the best part :). Starting from zero I dint expect much. Thankfully, I've got very lucky to have an incredible coach, Luciano Gonzalez. He is a professional world renown water sports champion for many years. His level of knowledge and expertise is far above of any advance level surfing. Luciano was able to congest and simplify technics to allow me progress in unbelievably short time. I am extremely thankful to my coach Luciano and entire Swell team. Looking forward coming back!

We had a great time learning to surf with Neno and the gang as total beginners. The rooms look like the photos and the food they cook is phenomenal. 10/10 would come again!
Terrific Surf Adventure for Solo Traveller
I spent 6 days at Swell Surf camp. I highly recommend this boutique style accommodation and outstanding quality surf lessons. Each day I partook in two surf lessons. In between we all gathered for an AMAZING breakfast. I am already missing the food and I have been home just 2 days. Words cannot describe how nutritious and delicious my diet was during my stay at Swell. Lessons are led by experienced, award-winning instructors. I learned so very much and cannot even believe the small hard surf board I graduated to by day 4. You really do learn from the best. I also have to mention how much fun it is to ride in the van with everyone to Encuento Beach Beach. This transportation is prompt and safe. We all enjoyed music, laughter, and chatter on the way to and from the beach each morning. Haudy, Swell's Manager, is completely focused on making your stay a wonderful time. She is so kind and welcoming. She is smart and does not miss a beat. You are in good hands with Haudy. Monday, Wednesday, and Friday I always looked forward to yoga with Molly and followed by a delicious meal cooked right in the open dining room beside the pool. I got to sit down with my new friends and surf instructors and celebrate the joys of each day. Tuesday and Thursday I spent dinner at various restaurants on the beach just a 5-7 min walk from Swell house. There is SO much to do and see on your free time. Cabarete is an amazing place! The culture, food, and weather is outstanding. My bedroom at Swell felt like home! The bed is super comfortable. The bathroom and room is tidy and clean. The AC and fan make returning "home" from hot days in DR so such a luxury haven. I slept so well in my room each nap and evening. I also took advantage of the excursions. I signed up for the Canyoning trip. I got to see some new sites, continue with my fitness/exercise, and swim in cool waters. I will go back to Swell! It was amazing. HUGE thank you to the staff, instructors, security, chefs, housekeepers, and Michel (transportation).
My best surf camp experience, so far........
I’ve just returned from a 10 night stay at Swell safe camp. I have to say it was one of my best holiday experiences of all time and I’ve been on a lot of vacations, including surf camps in several different countries. I am well used to traveling alone, but as a 51 year old, I wasn’t sure at first to believe how well I would fit in at a place like Swell. From the moment I enter the building (which looks even better in real life than the photos) all my fears and anxieties were relieved. I don’t think I’ve ever walked into such a welcoming space. Neno, the chief Surf Instructor and the other guys were all there to greet me, along with the wonderful Haudy, who is managing the place. My first surf lesson began the day after my arrival, but before that I was asked about myself experience so that they could make sure I was placed in the right group which was encouraging. As an 'intermediate surfer', I was generally with Henrri who I found it to be incredibly helpful and encouraging. Even though I have some surf experience, I learned a lot more tips and advice from the team who were always on hand to help. Neno particularly offered extra advice if he saw me making errors. The pool paddle practice, and the theory lessons were also quite useful to me. The food, both breakfasts and dinners were superb, and the overall ambience of the place was second to none when I compared to other surf camps I have visited in the past. Rooms are spotlessly, clean and very relaxing to be in. I even tried a couple of hours of wing foiling lessons which I thoroughly enjoyed but as I didn’t start until the fourth day of my trip unfortunately I run out of time to make enough progress. I would definitely choose Swell again and my advice would be to start the other activities sooner rather than later if you want to learn them too! Thanks Swell team, Justine.
Just returned from a week at Swell and am already trying to figure out when I can return. The surf coaches are all great and work closely with you throughout your time in and out of the water. They truly wanted you to succeed every day by providing any feedback and encouragement needed. The accommodations were clean and perfect for the vibe swell is going for. The room was cleaned daily and never did I feel unsafe in the room or the location. Your safe is large enough for a smaller laptop and valuables so you do not need to worry when not onsite and a security person is there throughout the night to ensure your safety. The food each day was wonderful and they were happy to change things to your liking if needed. There are also tons of great options for food nearby and easily walkable. The transportation was always on time to ensure you got to the break earlier than anyone else out there, we even left slightly earlier a few days to ensure we go the best conditions thanks to Neno's suggestion. Yoga was also great and well taught, highly recommend it at the end of a long day. Haudy was very helpful in arranging excursions and any additional needed transportation/suggestions. Clare also checked in to see how things were going during the week which was a nice extra touch. Best of all is meeting likeminded folks from all over who became close friends by the end of the week. If you need a reset and active vacation I highly recommend swell, it truly is like going to camp as an adult!
Wonderful time. Went solo and a bit last minute but booking with Clare was easy and prompt. Met some amazing people and ate amazing food but most of all, tried surfing (something I never thought I’d attempt in my lifetime). I could not go daily though because it took a toll on me so I paced myself. Also did yoga all 3 days (loved Molly whom was patient with me and helped with my form and I’m now convinced to do more of it), snorkeling (I’ve never been dropped out in the middle of the ocean to snorkel before and the guide was super calm and patient) and canyoning (also first time and I took every single jump into the cool water! hiking park was great - more my jam), all easily arranged by the manager. Staff on site from night guards to the cooks, cleaner/repair guy and the manager were great. Drivers were cool too! Neno, mad props to this guy. Wonderful surf instructor who cares about teaching and helps you have fun at the same time. The guy clearly takes his job seriously. The rest of the team were super chill too. I may bring my little girl out next time for her to try it out when she’s strong enough to lift a board on her own. I wish there were direct flights. I loved how intimate everything was, but how there was a bit of “city life” in the small town it was in. I’ve never been fond of being in the ocean after some trauma in the past but I made myself do it in my 40s and I am so glad this team helped me get past my fears! YOLO.
Simply a Great Experience! I just spent 10 days at Swell in December, 2022. I had a super time. As a result of a large storm in the Mid-Atlantic, the surf was larger than normal. So, as a beginner surfer, I spent my time in the secondary whitewater. But I still enjoyed it thoroughly. The surf instructors, led by Neno, were such nice guys -- Henry, Danny and Melvin. In fact, the entire staff at Swell, led by the manager Houdy, was super-professional and super-accommodating. Food was great, room was clean and tasteful, and the other guests were an amiable mix of folks from England, Canada and the U.S. I'd definitely recommend Swell for those that want to learn to surf and have a lovely time in a stunning place.
Great trip: food, service, fellow guests, and surf instruction all exceeded expectations. And management was a huge help replacing broken phone!
We completed our stay last week at Swell and had such a fantastic time! Overall, the experience was so different than any other vacation we have done in the past. The atmosphere at Swell and the team running the operations were very professional, and I can't say enough about them and the welcoming environment they provided to us daily. The breakfasts every day and the quality of their home-cooked dinners Monday, Wednesday, and Friday were delicious! We enjoyed the like-minded guests during our stay. It's like the Swell Universe brings the right people together to collaborate for healthy conservations and experiences.
This review is long overdue as I have been twice to this surf camp. A gem of a place to treat yourself to for an active vacation! With luxurious en-suite accommodations with all amenities provided for (more than basics), such as shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, bath towels, and beach towels... Just bring your bathing suit! The rooms are cleaned everyday. The meals were among the best I've ever had, prepared with care by two smiling local ladies. If only I could eat like this year-long...Two long surf sessions to perfect your skills starting early in the morning. It was the most natural wake-up call to go greet the ocean each morning, chauffeured by a happy-go-lucky Miguel. The facilites (outdoor pool, pool table, baby foot, communal dining areas and lounge) were good for social interactions, or quiet alone downtime. A step away is the beach and Cabarete, a town full of locals and expats, with restaurants, bars and shops to explore. Don't forget to book the canyoning activity, one of the most memorable physical activities. I also lucked out in trying wind surfing at no cost, some local surfer just kindly offered a free lesson... And most of all, I felt so lucky to meet all the persons, working at Swell or vacationing there, and to be in such great company! Special shoutout to Neno and Haudy, who basically make this place THE place! A must for people who despise all-inclusive resorts where alcohol flow freely with nothing to do but lounge around... You will love this place!
Just spent my first week at Swell and it was amazing. The staff goes out of their way to make sure your stay is wonderful. The food was delicious and the surf instructors were cool and laid back (Neno, Henry, Melvon, and Dani). The accommodations are simple but comfortable. The place is clean and the landscaping is beautiful. Hoping to go back next year!
Swell surf camp is amazing. The perfect place to surf, socialize and explore. Surf coaches and staff are the best. Thank you Haudy, Neno and all! Awesome week with solo and duo travelers. The vibe is perfect with tropical oasis feel, great food and amenities, and comfy places to hang out. First time surfing…up and catching waves the first day. Encuentro beach is a great place to surf. Haudy connected me with local Bachata dance group and a Latin dance party on the beach. Fun night out with Swell friends and new friends from dance class. Oh, and yoga with Ella is great. Thank you Swell!
I had an amazing trip to Cabarete thanks to Swell! I was extremely nervous doing my first solo trip internationally as a female - especially during the pandemic. Clare, the owner of Swell, took the time to answer all of my questions leading up to my trip, and provided me with very informative and helpful information for planning my trip logistics. Once I arrived in Cabarete, I felt so safe and taken care of by Swell! Haudy, the manager on site, is amazing and she is available to you with any questions or logistics planning you may need during your trip. The surfing instructors I had that week - Neno, Henry, and Daniele - were very professional, experienced, and friendly instructors. Safety was their top priority. They were very patient, taking the time with each person to make sure they were excelling at their own pace all week. I progressed my beginner surfing capabilities so much thanks to them! They were truly a pleasure to hang out with, and made everyone feel welcome and included. I also did kiteboarding lessons with LEK kiteboarding while at Swell which was another great experience. The food and accommodations at Swell were great. I stayed in one of the private rooms - it was spacious, cleaned daily, and the beds were very comfortable which was important for how much physical activity I was doing each day. The breakfasts and dinners are beautifully prepared, healthy, tasty, and all local dishes. The cooks were so friendly and would make adjustments for your needs. Being a directionally challenged person, Swell's location made it easy to access everything you needed within walking distance - from Cabarete beach, restaurants, bars, shops, etc. Thank you to everyone at Swell that made this an incredible experience! I look forward to going back someday soon!
This place is awesome! Clean rooms, great vibe, WONDERFUL FOOD, and great instructors. I spent a week at Swell in December 2021, and can't say enough good things about it. I didn't make as much headway learning to surf as I had hoped, but the instructors were great and I'd love to go back and make more progress with them.
Highly Recommend! Such a great experience and so much to do along with surfing. The Swell rooms are exceptionally clean. The staff are all so friendly and accommodating. The surf instructors are some of the best I’ve ever had. The management is wonderful and organized. So nice to have a swell taxi pick us up to drive a short distance, to surf every day. I felt well taken care of and happy in this beautiful place! I am looking forward to returning.
Claire, Haudy, and the team have created a wonderful surf/kiteboard camp experience - and I mean "wonderful" in every way possible. Haudy, as the onsite host, was amazing and so wonderful to deal with. The cooks were so friendly and good at what they do. The instructors were great and so much fun (see pic below). All of us staying at Swell got along so well. We hung out every day. Many new friendships made. I was a solo traveler (as were many) - yet I never felt that way. The trip was Thanksgiving 2021. The Swell "surf house" was cool in that the main floor has minimal walls for a very open feeling. The guest rooms are all on the 2nd floor. It's 2 blocks from the main Cabarete beach where there's kiteboarding, bodysurfing, and many open-air options for food and drinks. The surfing beach is nearby with the waves that make Cabarete famous. Thank you for the wonderful vacation!! John
What an amazing place! Haudy, the chefs and the team of surf coaches are incredible people who make you feel at home. I got better at surfing, enjoyed the sun and beaches in Cabarate and made new friends along the way. Great experience!
I had an absolutely amazing time at Swell surf camp. Everyone was so kind and made me feel so welcome. This was my first solo trip and I couldn’t have asked for a better one!! The food was incredible. The surf coaches were very helpful (it was my first time surfing ever and I learned a lot) definitely want to continue learning how to surf! Definitely want to go back soon!!
Honestly, this trip was so life changing that I quit my job the Monday after my trip was over. I had never surfed before in my life but have always wanted to try it so I sat down and hit up Google to find the right surf camp. After a few hours of research, I landed on Swell and, man, am I so happy I chose it! I actually ended up picking Swell over a few other places because of how many positive reviews they had and now that I've been there, I can say they've earned all five stars over and over! The People: Everyone, and I mean everyone, is so incredibly kind and friendly! Haudy was amazing (she set up and even drove us to get our COVID tests), the night security guard and the cooks were so lovely and always had a smile on their faces, and the surf instructors were an absolute blast! Seriously, they are some of the nicest people you will ever meet and day after day, they encouraged the entire group to "stand up!" The Surfing: As a newbie, the beach we surfed at was a dream. Seriously, if you're worried about the 6:45am roll call to the first surfing session, you will forget about that the minute you see the sunrise on the beach. It's breathtaking. The instructors, and especially Neno, are THE BEST - they constantly watched us to help us make tweaks so that we improved each day. During our week, everyone in our group moved on from the foam training boards to a true long board (which was a constant wipe out day) but the guys were very encouraging - telling us it's all a part of the process. You do need the surf booties btw - lots of sea urchins! The Yoga & Other Activities: I'm a fitness fan so adding on yoga was a no brainer for me. It really helped stretch out some of my sore muscles and Molly was a ray of positivity to guide our practice. The one note I will call out is this is not a tranquil session. The camp is right off the road so while you practice it is a bit noisy. If you get the chance, DEFINITELY do the canyoning! It was such an amazing experience; however, I would say you have to be in some sort of shape as the hike out at the end is almost vertical (great if you like bouldering!) The Camp: The camp was a great place to hang out to read a book, catch with fellow surfers, and have our family dinners. It's clean and well stocked with drinks (soda, gatorade, pedialyte, beer). The pool was refreshing and the rooms were cleaned daily (they even did our laundry if we asked which I was not expecting!) The location turned out to be great too which I wasn't sure of when I looked up the camp originally. It's a 5-min walk to the kite surfing beach which you can walk up 10-15 mins to all of the beach bars and dinner spots (It was super safe to walk at night too btw). Our entire group had a blast "downtown" celebrating a few birthdays at. Mojitos and a dance party at Ojo's. Oh and the food at camp...it truly was so healthy and so delicious. Also, if you need to, the wifi was pretty strong to answer emails, Facetime, or take a zoom meeting... FYI. Traveling Alone: One of the other reasons I chose this camp was because I had intended on traveling alone. I chose the dorm for the sole purpose of meeting other travelers and it was great - in fact my bunk mate and I became very close and I hope to visit her soon as she stayed in the DR. Each and every person there had a story to share and we truly all bonded during our various lengths of stay. What they don't tell you at Swell is that there's this magical thing about learning something new along side other people. Every morning, our group would gather round and I'd read a morning mantra while we had our coffees and that set the tone and intention for our days. We talked about what it meant and carried it with us as we learned to surf. We cheered each other on, we laughed when we fell, we spoke attempted Spanglish, and we teared up any time someone had to leave to go home. If you're looking for a place to learn to surf or if you're looking for a place to find yourself, Swell is the perfect place to do it!
As someone who has visited surf camps around the world for nearly 30 years, Swell really stands out. It is not geared towards your experienced, frothing ripper, rather Swell does an outstanding job of welcoming and teaching beginners and the less experienced surfer. I would recommend Swell to anyone 20 to 60 years old who dreams of learning to surf. The social experience is just great, too. You might hear five different languages around the communal table, all expressing their stoke. The staff, food, and instructors are all top notch. I just completed my third visit, and I will definitely be returning for a fourth.
Honestly one of the best trips I've ever taken. The entire staff was extremely helpful and just fun to be around. The surf instructors were knowledgeable and really helped me with my fundamentals (not my first time surfing). The manager, Haudy, made the entire stay super easy and even went out of her way to help me with last minute Covid testing in Sosua. Above and beyond. Also, the food was outstanding. The two women cooking never disappointed and were really sweet. The fish can't be missed. Swell couldn't make it any easier. You can go on autopilot, surf, and just enjoy yourself. Town is right down the street with all restaurants and bars. I had maybe a little too much fun in Cabarete so be prepared. I couldn't recommend this place more. Didn't want to leave.
This review is long overdue, but a testament to how much this establishment deserves the merit. I stayed at Swell in July 2021 and had the most incredible experience! From booking your experience with the owner to arriving and being greeted by the warmest host to practicing how to surf with some of the greatest instructors I've ever met, to eating freshly cooked meals, to making friends that will keep in touch for a lifetime. Truly, this was a stay that I will remember forever. I have been surfing for a few years now, but would still consider myself a beginner - intermediate level. The techniques I have learned in Cabarete, have definitely brought me to the intermediate level and I still use as a winter surfer in New York City! If you are having any doubts, please shoo them away as you would be missing out if you didn't experience Swell in all its glory. This summer I look forward to visiting Swell Bali!
Swell Surf Camp is unique!
As someone who has visited dozens of surf camps over the last three decades, Swell Cabarate stands out. While most surf camps cater to younger advanced surfers, Swell aims for the beginner / less experienced surfer. If you are 20 or 50 years old and have dreamed of learning to surf - Swell is your place. The staff, food, and surf instructors are top notch. The hotel and grounds are lovely and welcoming. The social aspect is especially great. At the communal table you might hear five different languages being spoken, all expressing their stoke of surfing and being in the DR. I highly recommend Swell to anyone who dreams of a surfing adventure.

Swell is the Best!!!
This was one of the best trips ever. My daughter and I were a little nervous traveling out of the country during the height of covid but we felt completely safe at Swell. Clare, the owner was incredibly responsive to all my questions and Haudy the manager was there to help us with anything we needed. The accommodations are beautiful and the food is amazing. The surf instructors were incredibly attentive, helpful and fun! The waves are great for any level of surfer. Whether you are single, a couple or a family, this is a perfect adventurous vacation.
Amazing first solo trip thanks to Swell!
I rarely make time to write a review, but this place Exceeded Expectations! The Swell team was very responsive both pre-trip and during the trip. They were very helpful in navigating the confusing covid travel rules and provided plenty of details to prepare for the trip. Their Surf team (Nano, Jeffery & Samuel) were awesome! They kept us safe, ensured we had fun and encouraged us to push or skill level when we were ready. They really set us up for a successful surf trip. We loved the community atmosphere and quickly got to know the other surfers. The location was also great. The beach was across the street and there was a plethora of quality restaurants nearby. We are already discussing our next trip back!
Swell Surf Camp was my first solo trip ever and it was everything I was looking for and then some. Clare helped me get organized and promptly answered any questions I had prior to arrival. Upon arrival Haudy was great and gave me the lay of the land and helped me feel very welcomed at Swell. She was able to help schedule my covid test for returning to the US, taxis whenever we needed to go anywhere, called a spa and set up appointments, basically she was there to make sure everything runs smoothly. The rooms and common areas stay very clean, as they are constantly cleaned. I have to say my favorite part was the surf instructors, Neno, Jeffrey, and Samuel were AWESOME!! They really love what they do, make surfing fun for all different skill levels, and are genuinely great people. I really feel that I left there as friends with them. The food was excellent, I am going to miss all the delicious meals that were prepared at Swell. I recommend Swell Surf Camp to anyone who is looking for an amazing vacation. Whether you’re a solo traveler, a couple, or small family you will have a great time. I am really looking forward to coming back very soon!
I’ve just returned home from an incredible week at Swell. My initial trip last July had to be delayed due to covid, but I rebooked it as soon as possible with Clare's help. I’ve stayed at a few surf camps before, but this one was by far the most fun I’ve had. It’s so well run and feels like being in someone’s super-cool home with amazing food and a really friendly, welcoming vibe. The 4 surf coaches, Neno, Jeffrey, Henry and Julissa (I hope I spelled them all right!) are so fun and supportive. I was lucky enough to have a lesson with each of them and they’ve all got really good insight into how I could improve my techniques (and get rid of some bad habits!) because I wasn’t a complete beginner. The waves were really fun and I managed to get into some lovely green faces after a few days: Clare had helped me choose the right time of year to come, because I had already surfed a bit before. The place is spotless and looks even better in real life than the photos on the website; I loved my huge bed and for once, A/C which actually worked! Travelling alone was easy and getting from the airport to Swell was super quick in the airport taxis (I was at Swell in just over an hour from landing). Swell staff helped me get my antigen test sorted out for my return to the US; that’s so easy because it’s only about 200 meters walk to the little lab from Swell. I think I will try their Bali location next!
I stayed here for kiteboarding with LEK. What an awesome time. The dinners where prepared in the open kitchen & the senses start being massaged well before dinner time. The room was well appointed & comfy. Just a stroll to the beach. The manager Haudy was beyond helpful, & she even helped me navigate the town, thank u! & Thanx to the staff that helps keep up the place, awesome job. You will not regret a stay here. 😊
Can't say enough good things about Swell. From the instructors, Haudy, the food, the rooms, and the overall experience. If you're looking to improve your surfing, while having fun in an inclusive environment for all ages this is your spot. Swell has something for everyone. I'll be coming back. Thanks for the great experience.
My wife and I had an amazing trip to Cabarete thanks to Swell. We cannot say enough about the whole experience and every person on their team. Everyone was incredibly helpful, friendly and accommodating. The owner and Haudy provided valuable support and information for planning trip logistics before, during and leaving Cabarete, making the process very simple for travel and other activities like kite boarding or canyoning. The surfing instructors could not have been better. They met each person where they were at with their skills, were truly a pleasure to hang out with, and made everyone feel welcome and included. The food and accommodations were perfect. The breakfasts and dinners are beautifully prepared, healthy, tasty, and all local dishes. The cooks were so friendly and would make adjustments for your needs. The rooms and facility are very well kept, clean, and comfortable. Their location made it easy to access the beach and all that you would want to do in Cabarete. Being able to meet and hang out with other guests was an added bonus. While you could do your own thing, the community vibe was friendly, low key and pleasant. I left feeling like I was part of the Swell family. Thank you to everyone that made this an unforgettable experience.
my five nights and six days at swell were fabulous! i only wish that i was staying longer! as a solo traveler it was the perfect balance of time with the other guests surfing, eating and lounging - as well as time to myself to relax on the beach and explore cabarete. clare has put together a perfect team of surf (and yoga) instructors, housekeepers/cooks, et al run by the lovely haudy! this was my first time to the DR and i will definitely be back! and i plan to return to swell - either solo or with my kids and/or friends. everything was so well organized and explained. and i really enjoyed getting to know our awesome surf coaches and fellow guests!!!
Just got back from a terrific week at Swell Surf Camp. I took my two kids, and we surfed, we went snorkeling, horseback riding. We also went zip lining thru a gorge and crashed into a deep freshwater lagoon... and did I mention we explored deep underground caves, and jumped into cave water swimming holes?
There has been a "scare" about the Dominican Republic, in recent months, and I did a lot of research before I went with my two children. I learned that the people that died were an 8 hour car ride from where we stayed at Swell Surf Camp. It is on the completely opposite side of the island. The deaths were at a resort, where cheap alcohol and intense partying is the norm. Even with the deaths in the DR, the DR is sill not in the top 20 of countries where US citizens die when they are abroad on vacation. I live in NYC and an 8 hour drive would be equivalent in distance as Pittsburgh. I certainly wouldn't panic if a few people drank bad ice and vodka in Pittsburgh 8 hours from my home in NYC. I certainly wouldn't expect that tourist would stop coming to NYC because of something 8 hours away.
I'm a doctor, and when overweight, Americans, come to a tropical resort, and drink, do recreational drugs, mix them with Viagra, and keep this binge going for 5-7 days in a row, you will get a few deaths per year. Every year, this is a statistic that persists. This year, the news singled out, DR.
Swell Surf Camp is the exact opposite in hospitality and concept of where the tourist died a few months ago. Swell Surf Camp is small, we had under 10 guests. It is in a 24 hour private security, property.
Meals were expertly prepared by two women chefs, Esmeralda and Estelle. It is not a drunken, hedonistic scene. There is no bar on site. You can get bottled beer. No one got sick, and everyone was safe. I just returned back to NYC yesterday, and we had probably the best vacation we ever had. I'm going back next spring.
Do not hesitate going to Swell. It's a special place, with special staff, and the surfing was excellent for 7 days in a row!
Dr. Doug Willen
Hands-down our short stay at Swell surf camp was the best trip we have been on as a family. The staff was incredible. The coaches are genuinely kind and helpful people. The food was amazing. The accommodations clean and comfortable. I don’t know what else to say. Haudy, the concierge, was so sweet and accommodating. She arranged several side trips for us after surfing. With her local knowledge our extra activities were always top-notch and reasonably priced. We planned this as a family-reconnecting trip with our boys (20 and 18) that live on opposite coasts. We couldn’t be happier. We could choose to socialize with the other guests or we could find a quiet spot just to sit and catch up on our lives. (We did a lot of both) Dinner was always great time meeting and socializing with the other guests. The breakfasts though; that’s a real treat! When you get back from the first session there’s an amazing breakfast waiting to fuel you up for the second trip back to the beach. We rarely plan to visit the same spot twice but Swell Surf has us already pining for next year!
EVERYTHING was amazing!! Haudy was the best. The staff, food and service were incredible. The surf instructors were perfect. The yoga class with Molly was so therapeutic. The excursions Haudy scheduled for us (snorkeling/canyoning) were unbelievably fun. Swell camp was exactly what I was looking for. I only wish I had been able to do more yoga. Clare is now setting up Swell: Bali, and it’s on my list!!
Well, where to begin))) Stylish, clean, super friendly with most delicious food place. I almost don't want to share it because is soo good. But on a more surious note- Very professionally handled, organized and planed. Surfing lessons and instructors are great and very on point. Great stuff on site, very helpful and very well trained. Would I go there again?? I would go tomorrow, if I could.
Swell surf camp was such a great experience, my brother and I have always wanted to learn to surf and the instructors at Swell were spot on! Lee, Jeff and Neno gave us great lessons and gave us all the best tips to progress through our week long stay. Claire was excellent in giving us all the information we needed and organising the perfect package for us and Haudy was such a fabulous manager once we arrived. The surf camp has such a rad vibe where you can all socialise together and enjoy hanging out, play pool, have a swim in the pool and lounge about. We look forward to coming back and have such great memories of our trip.
Fantastic surf camp! I stayed here solo in August 2019. Everything at Swell was totally dialed in. It was my first time surfing in DR, and the owner was super responsive in helping me pick the right time to visit. Everyone on staff at the camp was top notch - manager, surf instructors, chefs, housekeeper, maintenance, security guard, seriously everyone was the best. They really take care of everything here, you just get to focus on your surfing and having fun! Highly recommended.
Flawless!!
My wife, mother, two sons and one daughter chose Swell Surf Camp because of the reviews and Swell's website. It was all and more than we were looking for. There was also the value for the money factor. Not cheap or chintzy, but not overpriced for all that we received. Their website mentioned that there was no live corral to get sliced up on, there were consistent waves, talented instructors, great food, clean and airy rooms. It was all true and better. The owners, Jim and Clare, know what they are doing. They have created an oasis for the perfect "learn to surf" holiday. The food is made from scratch, healthy and balanced, delicious, locally sourced and abundant in portions. The rooms are immaculate and the gated resort, safe. Not that we didn't feel safe on the main street during the day either. Just be wise and stay off the back streets at night like any city in Canada. The theory lessons were not long or irrelevant. The practical techniques made easy to understand and follow. The surf sessions, safe and fun. Although Jim and Clare were not there at the time, Haudy, their more than capable manageress, made sure that the whole operation ran smoothly. We, nor anyone else who were there at the same time, experienced any deficiencies or problems of any kind. She was constantly scanning for anything that might be amiss and require attention. She made a point of mingling with her guests and befriending them. Neno, Jeffry, Lee and Greg, our professional surf instructors, were friendly, patient and experienced surfers who instructed us on shore, in the pool and around the lounge area, teaching technique and theory. Our safety was their first concern in the water, keeping an eye on the water conditions and on us while at the same time teaching and giving us the opportunity to surf some great waves. They were able to teach this 56 year old Canadian to surf. They were not just instructors, but became good friends who hung with us outside of lesson times. Esmeralda and Arecelys, the two kitchen staff flawlessly cook a huge amount of food in an appetizing display of color and form. They were also very attentive to the surfers' needs. Esmeralda, who does not speak English, while preparing breakfast, noticed that we were a bit agitated about leaving one morning on an excursion. Our bus was not arriving. She took my phone and started Whats-app calling and getting things straightened out with the excursion company driver. A few minutes later we were picked up.. This exemplifies the attention and concern the staff have for their guests. Dietary requests were made ahead of time by us and executed well by the ladies for our entire stay. Sipriana kept our rooms superbly clean every day. She was considerate as well, cleaning our room around our schedules. Damian keeps the entire gated retreat neat and tidy and in good repair as the dedicated groundskeeper. Our stay at swell was fantastic. We felt safe the entire time. There is even a "night watchman" to ensure that nothing happens and that there is someone around for the guests to got to. We all simply left our phones and even wallets on the coffee table or lounge area. The staff are totally trust worthy and the guests came to surf, not pilfer. We were just like one happy family even as people came and went. We all got to know each other and are keeping in touch after our stay. The staff genuinely cared about us, for who we are, not just as guests to placate. I'd take this vacation stay over any pretentious all inclusive resort.

Awesome time at Swell!
If you are considering a surf vacation, and want to be social with other people, this is the place for you. The accommodations were clean and nice, and the food was delicious, but the best part of the experience was the people. The surf instructors were fantastic- making us feel comfortable whether it was our first time surfing or 100th. And a feeling of camaraderie grew amongst the guests and also with the staff during the week which you don’t find at other places. This was a unique and excellent experience for all of us- from our 17 and 19 year old sons to our middle aged selves. One word of warning- paddling is hard! Work those arms before you go!
Our best family vacation ever!
Your search for the perfect surf vacation is over! Just book here. From the moment we arrived until we left we felt welcomed and accepted regardless of our various levels of surf ability. The instruction was spot on. The food was amazing. The accommodations clean and comfortable. I don’t know what else to say. Haudy, the concierge, was totally accommodating and arranged several side trips for us after surfing. With her local knowledge our extra activities were always top-notch and reasonably priced. Outstanding ! amazing ! Great time ! Best vacation in very long time ! 'nuff said ..? Thanks for everything Clare and Team ! Really, Only yesterday I came back home from 10 amazing days. Food was by far much better than the restaurants on the beach. resort is so much fun. Just lay down in the common area, drink, play pool, Jump into the pool.. Such a relaxing place. Such a good time with the other guests. Perfect if you travel alone. You'll get to know so many great people from all over. Had no clue about surfing. Took me time to learn, i must say. But if the instructors were able to get me on the waves, Than They really did wonderful job :) The team there take care of everything. You don't have to do anything by your self. Well, actually, You just need to have fun ! How hard can it be.. :) Don't miss the canyoning experience ! Feels like Indiana Jones + Jurassic Park + Mission Impossible all together :) Will go there again for sure ! Itay
Our week long stay at Swell was nothing short of amazing. We came with a group of yoga students for a yoga and surf retreat. Clare, the owner, was incredible since the first day I reached out to her. She was extremely helpful and quick to respond to the almost 100+ email I sent her while planning this retreat! I really appreciate that she answered all of my questions with such detail and I felt comfortable bringing our yoga group to Swell even without having visited before. The staff at Swell is also amazing. From the surf instructors to Haudy, the manager, and the wonderful team that cooks the MOST DELICIOUS meals, we couldn't have been better taken care of. The team at Swell is truly special and go above and beyond to make sure your stay is perfect. This is the place to go to take surf lessons. The coaches were knowledgeable and patient, and always had the best attitudes. We enjoyed their instruction very much, and most of our guests were riding waves by the end of the week! It was so much fun. The hotel itself is beautiful, clean, and well taken care of. It's a little slice of heave and a wonderful place to relax and reset. If you're considering staying at Swell, go for it! You will not be disappointed and it may just be the best vacation you've had.
Swell: A Happy Place!
I recently traveled to Swell for a week of surfing and yoga. I was a little bit nervous travelling on my own, however the second I arrived my nervousness faded away. The resort is so well kept with an amazing swimming pool, palm trees and lounge area. Everyone who works at Swell is so positive and helpful! Clare, the owner got back to my e-mails about booking right away, Haudy, who greeted my when I arrived made sure that I was comfortable and answered any questions that I had about my stay. The surf instructors were amazing! Jeffry, Lee and Neno were so knowledgeable, supportive and patient and most importantly made the surf lessons so much fun! I had taken surf lessons prior to this experience, but the instruction that I received in Australia, Costa Rica and California were no comparison to the instruction that I received at Swell. I felt completely safe and confidant on the water with all of the instructors. Not only was the surfing amazing, but yoga with Molly was fantastic too! Molly is so positive and encouraging and her yoga classes were the perfect way to stretch and relax tired "after surfing" muscles. The food at Swell went above and beyond my expectations. Breakfasts and dinners were always so delicious. I got to spend time with other like minded guests and made some great friends out of the experience! Swell seems to be a "good vibes only" type of place that I would be thrilled to return to!
Best week ever!
My best friend and I recently spent a week at Swell. We both felt that it was one of the best weeks of our lives! One of my most favourite trips I have ever been on. Everything was amazing! The rooms are spacious and clean. The food prepared at camp is delicious and they catered to me being a vegetarian. The grounds are so magnificently kept. Everything is beautiful. We felt super safe the entire time. The other guests staying at camp were awesome and we had a blast making new friends. There’s plenty to do in town to stay busy, but also a lot of downtime to chill out and relax. I hadn’t been surfing in a couple of years and was a bit nervous, but after only our first lesson with Lee as our instructor, we felt confident and quickly started catching waves. Lee and Neno really made us feel safe in the water the entire time, and I really appreciated their patience, knowledge and enthusiasm. 10/10!!! I left as a much better surfer than when I arrived. Would definitely recommend this place to anyone looking! We will for sure be back!
You definitely want to come here!

OMG! Swell Surf Camp far exceeded our expectations! The Camp grounds and buildings are meticulous, the food delicious, the surf instructors top notch, and the staff couldn’t do enough for us! Prior to our arrival Clare (owner) drilled into our heads to NOT drink the local water and to make sure ordered drinks were opened in front of you. This information was repeated over and over again! And we paid attention!! We will definitely be back - hopefully next year!
Stop Searching! Dont Even Read Another Review! This is Where You're Staying!
There was never a time I didn't feel at home at Swell. All the staff are warm, welcoming, and absolute professionals. The grounds are beautiful and immaculate. The rooms are ample sized, kept very clean, and EVERYTHING works! For the social butterflies, there is plenty of space to mingle and get to know the staff and guests. For the awkward introverts, you can stay in your room all day and soak up the a/c if you want to and nobody will bother you. Nobody likes you anyway. The camp is close enough to the action in town that you won't need a cab during your stay if you want to try out the local cuisine, but just far enough that you can guarantee a good night's sleep before your morning session. The surf instructors are amazing; super talented, knowledgeable, and patient. I should've put this first: The food is AMAZING! Never a bad meal. Never even a descent meal. They were all top-notch. Nobody leaves when the Swell chefs are cooking dinner, you wont' find a better meal. Swell made my trip to the DR hands-down my most memorable and satisfying vacations. I could stay.
Outstanding ! amazing ! Great time ! Best vacation in very long time !
Itay
Planning on coming back
I’ve been to a few surf camps around the world (Costa Rica, Philippines and Canary Islands) and this was by far the most well thought out camp I’ve been to, from the scheduling to the location and setup of the house: 1. Scheduling: The morning starts off with a light breakfast - banana and coffee in the morning is enough to get you going for the first long morning session without throwing up on your paddle out beyond the break. We leave the house at 6:30am which is perfect timing for the waves given it’s low tide. We head back around 9am for a big breakfast (will talk about food below) and then head back out at 10:30am for a shorter session. I thought it was odd to not just stay out there once we went to the beach but honestly you will get tired after the first session and you will be excited to rest your muscles, get some sustenance and take a quick break before heading out again. After the second session, your schedule is basically free to explore. I like this aspect because it was the perfect mix of structure and flexibility leaving room for local exploration. Certain days, Swell provides dinner which gives you a chance to socialize with the rest of the house. 2. House location: the place was quite ideal in terms of location. It’s about 20-30 minutes outside POP airport which was greatly appreciated after a long flight. The house is located about 10 minutes from Encuentro which is where we have our surf lessons. It is also located across the street from the beach where a lot of kitesurfing takes place. If you want to explore beyond the house, you won’t feel stuck. It’s a 5 minute walk to the nearest casual dining area and a 10 minute walk to the restaurants on the beach which gives plenty of options to explore. 3. The house itself: the pics are true to form. Very open space downstairs with well designed rooms. I opted for one of the single rooms. Huge king size bed with closet space, a safe, and a very clean bathroom. It has AC which is a nice luxury to have but I used it sparingly to limit my use of energy. They are strict on use of kitchen (I.e. you can’t use it) but you don’t need it anyways. Everything you need is either provided or you can get nearby. 4. Food: Amazing! Breakfast is different everyday but you typically get some egg type entree, crepes, fruit, fresh squeezed juice. For dinner, they change up the menu so you don’t end up eating the same thing over and over again. Sometimes I wished dinner was provided everyday because it was so good but then again, I wouldn’t have explored other options otherwise. 5. Staff: Awesome. They understand hospitality which you may not get at every surf camp. Haudy the manager is on top of everything and the instructors are great for helping complete newbies and experienced beginners who are looking to increase their wave count. 6. Instruction: the instructors are VERY knowledgeable and use good judgment in transitioning newbies from white water surfing to legitimate green waves throughout the week. There are 2 off the beach instruction sessions: 1) in the pool, learning how to paddle, sit on the board, turtle roll etc. and 2) “textbook” lesson about the waves - what causes a wave, different types of waves, surf etiquette etc. The major difference between this and other surf camps is that Swell does not take pictures or video for you to review afterwards. Personally, I didn’t find this tactic all that helpful so don’t think you’re missing much on this front. 7. Waves: Mother Nature is what it is. When I was there, on certain days, it was 2-3ft, others were 4ft. Sometimes the waves were clean but days after rain, it was pretty choppy. In other words, you get what you get. It’s a reef break, so the waves are further out from the beach - prepare to paddle. I was used to beach and point breaks so the paddling (for those surfing green waves) was really what got me. The instructors get you through it and guide you on where to paddle based on where the channel is - the first paddle out is always the worst. For advanced surfers, if you get bored going to the same break (Encuentro) repeatedly, this place may not be for you. Helpful tips: 1. Gordito’s across the street from the house is phenomenal. I still dream of their shrimp burrito and it’s all I crave after a long surf session. The gelato stand next to Gordito’s was also great - highly suggest the cherry flavor 2. Money - bring cash. You don’t need to exchange US$. I survived without exchanging any money. Typically what happens is you pay in US$ and then they give you change in Dominican Pesos. Exchange rate is around 50:1 but restaurants take a little off the top with 48:1 if you pay in dollars which I don’t think is that big a deal. You can use a credit card but I think you get charged extra for it at most restaurants. 3. If you need a massage, ask Haudy to book an appointment for you. It’s about $28 for a no frills massage down the street from the house. 4. What to pack: (this is for the ladies) don’t overpack. It’s pretty casual there as a beach town. I wore athletic clothes the entire time. - Swimsuits (make sure they are not flimsy as they will get undone when you’re in the waves). You do NOT need to bring a rash guard. You are required to wear ones provided by the camp. - Board shorts. But bring surf leggings if you’re accident prone and don’t want to get too scraped up. Also, if you sit on the board, your skin can chafe if your board shorts are not long enough - Optional: surf booties to prevent getting pricked by sea urchins. The camp provides booties but I suggest bringing your own if you don’t like sharing shoes with strangers - Flip flops of course - Bug spray - there are mosquitoes - Sunscreen (both face and body) - Water bottle - Optional: if you plan to go canyoning for one of the day trips (which I highly suggest), bring sneakers you’re willing to get wet since you’ll be rappelling through waterfalls and walking/ swimming through streams 5. People - for those of you who have never been to surf camps, your experience can be affected either positively or negatively by other guests you’re with given the social setting. It’s pretty rare to have a negative experience. Most people I’ve encountered in these types of vacations are super chill and I still keep in contact with a lot of people I’ve met at surf camps. At this one for the specific week I stayed, the guests were very inclusive and always asked if anyone wanted to join when making plans. So don’t worry about getting any social anxiety. Also, if you want to be by yourself, you can totally do that as well. I needed time to decompress and went out on my own quite often as did the other guests. 6. Get in shape beforehand. I went for 7 days and I was wiped by day 7. It will be a lot more fun if you’re physically prepared.
Great camp great staff and great guests
It is a great place if you are not uptight. Everyone is free to do as they please during the afternoons and in the mornings everyone is looking forward to surfing. If you don't want to surf it's also Ok but in general everyone wants to head out. The coaches are great ensuring you are confident and have the best technique while also ensuring you are progressing every day. They are also very knowledgeable of the beach and know exactly where to wait for the waves and even some locals will follow them on the lineup. The food at camp is excellent and you really are able to surf all morning and then either relax or go to the beach in the afternoon. Will return!
Amazing Surf Camp!
Swell was absolutely amazing. First of all, it is extremely clean and rooms are cleaned daily. Secondly, the women cooks do an incredible job preparing meals. So tasty and fresh. Still obsessing over mango. Haudy is incredibly warm and welcoming. Great spot for a solo traveler or group of friends. Cabarete feels like it's still a locals town and much more authentic Dominican than you would receive in a resort town. Super laid back town but with fun bars and restuarants and cute smaller establishments. Everything is walking distance from the camp. You can find pure relaxation or lots of fun at the camp. It is whatever YOU make it! Jeffrey, Neno, and Lee are incredible instructors. They alone are worth the trip. They are supportive and patient in the water but also fun and entertaining. I would have never have gotten up on the board without them and their incredible teaching/coaching. Overall, I can't wait to be back and will continue to spread the word! You have a new fan/Swell family member.
My family of 4 (2 boys 16 and 18) just returned from our second stay at Swell - and will definitely be going back. Swell is as much an experience as a surf camp. The owners have created an environment that seems to attract fun, energetic, interesting instructors, staff and guests. The group during our visit included staff and guests from the UK, Australia, Canada, Germany, the US, and of course DR. The accommodations are clean and comfortable, the food is excellent, the surfing is a blast, and no request of the staff is a problem. We highly recommend and as stated, will definitely be returning. (BTW - no damage from any of this year's hurricanes to Swell or the surrounding area as best we could tell).
Amazing!!!
I recently got back from a week stay at Swell and it was everything I hoped for and more! I went as a Solo traveler so I'm always a bit nervous heading in, not knowing what to really expect, but the second I stepped into Swell everyone treated me like family and the nerves instantly went away. The Manger, Haudy, is a complete sweetheart and will go out of her way to make you feel conformable and make sure you have everything you need. The surf instructors, Lee and Neno are 2 of the friendliest guys you will ever meet. Both of them have amazing personalities and really want to see you succeed on the water and do an amazing job teaching you to surf. Both of them also go well out of their way to socialize and are happy to answer any questions you have about the area. They made the entire Swell experience even that much more amazing and I left with two incredible friends in them. Food was soo good. Chefs are in there hours before the dinners setting up and prepping for a delicious meals. Breakfast was also top notch! Oh, and I can officially tell my friends I know how to surf now :) If you are on the fence about staying here, I assure you that you will NOT be disappointed!
Amazing place to surf and relax with great people!
I was a solo traveler, first time in a surf camp. I didn't know what to expect, but everything turned out to be exactly as the website says! I had surfed once before, but had no real experience. I had a blast! Since it was low season, I basically had private lessons with Lee and he was great at teaching me the basics. I started out with the big soft top board and left the camp having surfed green waves with a hard top board! The beach we went to surf was Encuentro. The time I was there, it was pretty rowdy, with wind picking up pretty early. I still enjoyed surfing, but it was quite the task to get out there! The camp itself was great! Very well organized and there is always someone on duty. Haudy is a gem and made me feel right at home! I was in the dorm room, and it was exactly like the pictures! Clean, big and enough privacy. The staff was super friendly and the cooks made the best food! Breakfast and dinners were amazing. The ambiance in the camp will vary depending on who is there. When I arrived, there was a mix of families and solo travelers, everyone was super energetic and the group was very close. After a couple days, the camp was very quiet and relaxed with only a few guests. It stayed pretty calmed for the rest of my trip, but we all went to eat together, which was nice! I would definitely recommend this surf camp! The amenities were awesome, everything was designed with care and the surf schedule was perfect!
Great place great vibes great people
Been down here twice now and really enjoyed it both times. The staff is amazing and the place seems to attract some great people. Super fun location in the town near everything, but the surfing is in a place that’s not crowded (at least by my New York standards) and is super consistent. There’s also a cat that like shoes, and that’s pretty cool too I guess.
SWELL surf camp excellent experience
Learned a lot at SWELL from knowledgeable and patient surf instructors. Cooks prepared fabulous hardy/heathy meals. Facilities were very comfortable, clean and safe. Can't say enough about all the staff. Glad I stayed 2wks to allow time for other activities ie kiteboarding nearby. Traveled solo but felt part a family. Highly recommend this as an active holiday.
Great people make an amazing vacation!
We just finished a week at Swell and wished we had stayed longer. We are total beginners to surfing, but met a few seasoned surfers at Swell. We were the only couple with mostly solo travellers and had a great time meeting people. This place is special; not just for beginners to learn how to surf, but it has just the right mix. Great instructors (Neno, Lee, and Ben), great team lead by Manager Haudy, and a great atmosphere. The owners, Clare and Jeroen have put a lot of thought and care into Swell. The brunches and dinners at Swell are amazing! And well earned after two surf lessons a day. Food around town (Gorditos, Vagamundo Waffles, and Casa di Papi on the beach) are reasonable and tasty. The camp itself is intimate, clean, and modern. Wifi in the rooms is weak, but we didn’t mind, as you could use it in the common areas, and made us more social. One word of advice: if you want to learn how to surf and get up, make sure you do the exercises Clare will send you. If you don’t, you will probably struggle. We have already recommended Swell to several people and hoping to make our way back soon! Book it; you won’t regret it.
Best vacation we have ever had!
The Swell Team is amazing! In 7 days they successfully taught me how to surf. We had an absolutely wonderful time. My husband and I were traveling together and enjoyed the camaraderie and community that swell offers. The accommodations were perfect and the food was amazing! I have a gluten allergy and the chefs were so kind to always have options for me at each meal. Everything is planned for you the moment you arrive and you can truly relax and enjoy your vacation. I would give them ten stars if I could. Highly recommend Swell Surf Camp!!
2nd Visit - Twice as much fun!!
Swell has created a wonderful experience centered on surfing. Our family of 4 (2 sons, 18 and 16), just returned from another great trip (previous was 2 years ago - also a great experience). Swell's staff, from Haudy (manager) to the surf instructors, to chefs, and so on are fun, energetic, interesting people - just like the other guests Swell attracts. We are experienced surfers, but the instructors still had helpful suggestions, and for the guests with no surfing experience, all were up and riding waves the first day. After surfing, Swell is a relaxing place to lay by the pool, or in the hammock. Meals at Swell are fun, delicious, and family style that always seem to turn into fun nights (or not for those who choose an early bed). Yoga is great, and Haudy is able to seamlessly arrange for other activities including Canyoning, day trips into Puerto Plato, etc. Most of the guests were in their mid to late 20's through late 30's, but we felt perfectly comfortable with teenagers and the age range included those older than us (i.e. 50's). The instructors, who turn out to be social directors as well, are inclusive and fun. We will definitely be back again! BTW - Swell was not impacted by the numerous hurricanes this year, nor could we identify any damage to the area since our prior trip. It's an easy flight into Puerto Plata, a half our drive (that Swell arranges), and the fun begins. Highly recommend this awesome place/experience!!
Well rested mind...my body - not so much...
I had a fantastic vacation with Swell Surf Camp recently. Unfortunately there were only 3 other people at Swell during the time I was there, which made for a rather quiet nightlife, but on the plus side, there were 3 of us surfing and there were 3 instructors, so I had 1:1 instruction all week long. I must admit that I really stepped up my surfing game this time thanks to the awesome instruction from Neno, Jeffry and Ricki. Thank you all! Also a big shout out to the lovely kitchen ladies who prepared phenomenal breakfasts and dinners all week. It was truly gourmet! And thanks for Haidi for keeping the camp running smoothly all week and for making my birthday celebration one to remember. The room was bright, airy and clean and the overall 'camp' facilities are terrific. I would definitely recommend Swell Surf Camp to any beginner or Intermediate surfer. My mind had a nice break away from work, but my body was exhausted after a week of surfing. I can't wait to do it all again.
check one of your bucket list
I surfed once and have always wanted to surf again, but never could make it happen. Finally I took it in my own hands and booked a week at Swell Surf Camp. My room was beautiful, all of the outdoor areas of beautiful and well maintained. I used the pool several times a day. The breakfasts and dinners were fabulous and for the meals that were not served it was a quick walk into town for many options. The surf lessons were great - I did 7 in 7 days. The coaches are extremely knowledgable and professional. They also add to the ambiance by hanging out at the camp and sharing communal meals with the group. Most of the guests chose to eat together and take trips together, even on days when meals were not served at the camp. There were numerous people traveling alone and although I was much older than the group I always felt welcome to be a part of it. It is very demanding physically to surf every day and the trips can also be physically demanding, so I recommend a basic level of fitness and adventure. I also found the staff to be very accommodating.
Great place! I will go back soon.
I just spent 2 weeks at Swell. This was my second vacation there and I have only good things to say about the place. The rooms are spacious and clean. The food is delicious. The staff is friendly and very helpful. The garden and pool area are well maintained. The communal area is a great place to hang out. The surf instructors are fun and motivating. I like the set up with the 2 surf sessions in the morning, leaving the afternoon to relax by the pool or wander around town.
Incredible experience! I loved making new friends, learning to surf, and enjoyed the relaxing, communal vibe at Swell. Highly recommend!
What a great place! I'm sat here at 17.29 watching the evening meal being prepared with a beer in my hand and half a dozen new friends. The place is clean, contemporary and chilled. Everything is on hand nothing is too much trouble. The camp is a great way to learn to surf the easy way no pressure and no hassle. People from all over the world stay here, suitable for all. Plan a trip here and you won't regret it xx
Haudy is the best host ever! Great vibes here.
Relaxed vibe, excellent facilities, lovely staff and great surf instruction.
This is one of the only vacations I've been on where I was looking for dates for my next trip before I even left the airport. It was my first solo-trip and I had no idea what to expect. I read reviews (just like you're probably doing right now) and while reassuring, words can't explain how much fun you'll have and how at home you'll feel. There's something here for everyone, whether it's hanging by the pool, surfing/ kitesurfing, or going on a canyoning adventure (fun fact - if you're deathly afraid of heights like I am, maybe skip that one). Rooms and common areas were all cleaned every day and the food was incredible. I can't say enough about the staff there who really create the environment that everyone raves about. Cabarete was also a really cool area - lots of shops, restaurants, bars.. and a trapeze school right next door to Swell (thought that was as awesome as it was bizarre!). Oh, last thing! I have one of those jobs that allows me to work from anywhere as long as there's an internet connect. While yes, this was supposed to be a vacation, a couple "emergencies" did occur that I couldn't avoid. If that's of any importance to you, internet in the common area was really reliable and I was able to do everything I needed to.
My family had a blast. Surfing at Encuentro each dawn was fun and we progressed. Neno, Darby and Henri have a great vibe and gave us great instruction on the water. We made great friends at Swell with other campers and with the staff. Highly recommend the majic mushroom waterfall tour and 8 hour kitesurfing package at Laurel Eastman kitesurfing. Swell is a great base for exploring and the food is awesome. We are vegetarian and meals were delicious. We will be back.
Fantastic place with fantastic staff
I was only able to visit swell for a few days because of various reasons. A lot of people thought that I was mad for going all that way for a few days but the truth is that I would have been mad NOT to have gone. I couldn't recommend this place more highly. The people, the set up, the rooms and their surf instructors and surf plan was great.
Great time!
I spent a month in the Dominican Republic and some of my fondest memories are of my two weeks at Swell Surf camp. The management was great (Hauody), the surf instruction was good, and the Breakfast and Dinners were top notch. The establishment is very clean and well maintained. On my first day surfing I re-aggravated an old injury and I was in pretty bad shape. Hauody came through for me. She did all she could to comfort me and put me in the right direction to get the proper care which allowed me get back out in the water. I really appreciated that and it's something I won't forget. She's truly amazing and a real asset to this establishment as is everyone else. You all surpassed all expectations in every category and I'm definitely returning in the future. Thanks for the great experience!
Great Place to surf, to kite and to meet interesting and friendly people from around the world!
This has been one of the best holidays I ever booked with my wife and my 3 daughters. The camp, the rooms and the recreation spots (pool, pool billiard, kicker) are fabulous - after 2 weeks we have been completely "Swellonized"! Haudy and her team at Swell site as well as Clare (in the background) are always very helpful and sooo friendly. The surf instructors did a great job - I got a big green wave at the end of our lessons - and it took me all down to the beach:) The food (breakfast and dinner) are exceptionell - a big hug to Esmeralda and her colleague(s). Cabarete and especially the Swell Surf Camp are a great place for relaxing vacation. We will come back!
Everything I Needed and More Than I Expected!
I can't identify many things wrong with Swell. All members of the staff are kind, enthusiastic, and genuinely want to take good care of you. The housekeepers/cooks are some of the hardest working women I've ever met, and the meals they cook will make you go weak in the knees. I never once felt like I was in anything other than good hands while at Swell. Our room was clean and comfortable, the maintenance man keeps everything working, the instructors love their jobs and want nothing more than for you to find joy in surfing, and the establishment feels safe and secure. The surrounding neighborhood can be daunting at first (especially the insane roads!), but after spending an hour or two acclimating, you'll learn to love the character and unique-ness of it all. I would recommend Swell to anyone who is looking for the perfect mix of unscheduled freedom with open options and structured play time. Really, the only schedule you need to worry about is surf in the morning if you want...eat a delicious breakfast at 9:00AM...maybe take yoga in the afternoon...eat dinner provided by the kitchen every other day at 7:00PM. Everything else is unstructured and yours for the taking. I got everything I needed and more than I expected from Swell. Thank you!
All around wonderful...
Hands down, an incredible trip. I stayed at Swell for 7 days and couldn't have designed a better experience. The instruction, food, fellow travelers, and options for other adventure were all fantastic. - As a beginner surfer I wanted solid instruction in warm water with enough surt time opportunity to learn. The "on-water" instruction was thorough and I absolutely loved that they included an evening theory class that broke down the science behind why influcences/ creates waves. I was riding surf the first day and the second day was out on "real" waves. I felt supported, challenged and in good hands. - The food... outstanding! In fact I ate at some of the higher end restaurants and preferred the food served at swell. It was healthy, delicious and well prepared. If it was a restaurant it would be the best in town. - I loved the extra outings!- waterfall canyons, beaches, and lagoons. Stunning. - The opportunity to meet interesting and lovely people- unexpectedly precious. I was surprised at how phenomenal the other guests were. Great way to make new friends and have a communal experience. I also want to give a special shout out to Darby and Neno, whose surf instruction was phenomenal. And to Molly, whose sweet and gracious yoga instruction helped balance my body after long days in the water. Overall I loved it. In fact, i wish i was still there. :)
A Special Place...
This is a special place, unlike anywhere I have been before. It is not a hotel, and it is not a hostel. It is adventure camp for grownups. It’s not overly luxurious in the classic sense, but it is modern, clean, and beautiful, and the level of service and the communal arrangement gives you a sense that you are cared for in a way that classic luxury typically fails. You come to Swell first and foremost to learn how to surf the great consistent break at Encuentro, but also to meet interesting people from all over the world and to explore Cabarete and surrounding areas while having a safe beautiful oasis to return to. You can feel confident coming alone. It is a communal gathering place so if you are looking for pure solitude or a “honeymoon” experience, it may not be the best fit. You can of course find a solo corner for relaxation, in a hammock, a lounge chair by the pool, or a bean bag under the fan, reading a book as you watch the pink frangipani flowers fall to the ground. But Swell really shines when you open yourself up to others and go with the flow of activity and energy that might “swell up” over a Presidente and a glorious Dominican group meal. The people who work at Swell are the best part about it. Haudy is like a mama bear. She took care of so many small details. When I was there, one of the girls had a number of medical issues and she really stepped up to help her. On the last day I was so relaxed I forgot to arrange my taxi to the airport until the last minute. She had already arranged it on her own and reminded me when my flight was leaving and when the cab was arriving. The ladies who cook and clean are amazing and kind and helpful. The whole common area and the rooms are kept spotless. And as so many other reviewers have said, the food is fabulous. You don’t have a lot of choices but that’s okay because what is done is done so well. If you are a picky eater or have to have things a certain way, again it might not be the best choice. But if you can go with the flow you will be very satisfied. Every morning after the first session, there is something hearty like burritos or omelets, with amazing fresh fruit and crepes and some delicious homemade juice and great bread for toast. They make homemade muesli with fresh shaved coconut that is to die for. I usually had a huge breakfast and could just go with an afternoon snack instead of lunch. Dinners vary every night (they don’t have them every night) but usually are Dominican in some way, fish, chicken, beef, with great salads and plenty of sides. The meals I had at camp were some of the best I had the whole trip. I can’t say enough good things about our surf instructors, who also hung around and became our friends. Darby gave me so many great tips and inspired confidence. He really pushed me forward in my surfing without any judging. He is kind and grounded and has great taste in music! Neno was also a fabulous instructor and hang out buddy - and acro-yogi. He unknowingly inspired me to do the epic fail of a handstand on my board! Henrri did a fabulous job of taking care of us in the water and was also great company - he was always dancing! The instructors helped us plan some outside excursions and joined us on a few, and it made the trip so much better. I had surfed quite a few times before coming to Swell, but never felt like I conquered it. Swell was perfect for me. If you are already an expert surfer, you could still have a lot of fun at Swell, but I think it really caters to people who are beginners or intermediate. A few of us ended up going out to the back and catching the bigger waves and I couldn’t be happier to be in that group, as it was the primary goal of my trip. Darby made it seem like no big deal, which really helped. A number of people had never surfed before and I think every one of them got up on the board on the inside break. I saw that some reviewers thought it was expensive. I can’t speak to the private rooms, but I stayed in the dorm with a friend and found it very affordable, especially considering the value of the meals and the instruction and transportation to the beach, use of the boards and booties, etc. The dorm worked out perfectly. We had one other girl in there with us and it was fun to make friends. I've traveled all over the world and stayed in hostels so I am already prepared for the flexibility required. They have safes for each resident in the dorms and I felt very safe and comfortable there. The yoga is sort of an add on – it is not the primary focus. But I have a fairly active practice and was really glad there were some classes. Molly is really sweet and does a really solid class. Swell is not right on the beach, but it worked out great and I wouldn’t let that give you pause. You are close to everything in town and 5-10 minute drive to the main surf spot. I was always so happy to get back to our quiet little camp and fall into the pool after being at the beach. We easily walked down to the main beach in Cabarete where all the crazy action is. The schedule they create for the surfing is perfect. 7:00 is early (especially after some late fun nights) but honestly I could even get up earlier to surf because the waves and the beach are so great in the early morning. You get plenty of surf time and I was always really exhausted after both sessions. Two of the days a group of us chose to skip the second session and go on excursions, but I could always get that first session in and feel like I still had a good day of surfing. Wifi only works in the common areas, but worked well for me. I’m sure that anyone staying here could come up with some little things they think should be done differently, but I won’t bother giving you my extremely short list. No place is perfect, but this comes damn close. Come with a flexible mind about food, culture and your schedule, a desire to learn how to surf, and an open heart to meeting diverse people, and you will have a blast! I never do repeat vacations - and I mean never. But I WILL come back to Swell.
Incredible place, even better people.. can't wait to go back
This is one of the only vacations I've been on where I was looking for dates for my next trip before I even left the airport. Ok, back to planning my next visit. Hope to see ya there :)
Amazing two weeks, love Swell and the people i met
Really awesome holiday, the camp is great with homely rooms and really comfortable beds and very clean (rooms cleaned everyday just like a hotel). As you will read on other reviews the food really is amazing and you eat a lot of it but you will come home in better shape than when you went away! I wasn't sure if i would get a bit bored staying in one place on my own for two weeks but there was no chance of that, after two morning surf sessions chilling in the Swell garden by the pool or down by the beach is a pretty welcome activity. I did do a couple of really good excursions though and there is plenty on offer. The staff at Swell are amazing and really make you feel at home and the instructors build a really good sociable environment. If you like animals then they even have a cat and the best behaved dog i have ever encountered. Cabarete is a cool place, plenty to offer and some really good places to eat and drink on the beach and the Surf Instructors make a big effort to organize evening meals with the group on nights that food isn't provided at camp which is a nice touch. Highly recommended!
Unforgettable Vacation and one of my top destinations
It is rare that I return to place I visited even if I loved it, but after first visiting Swell in October 2016 there was no question as to whether I would return. I didn't just have a great vacation and improved on my surfing, but I also found a second home in the DR- so I returned at the end of April 2017 and after being home one week I am already planning my next trip back. The staff is amazing, friendly and helpful. When you arrive at Swell, plan on feeling welcomed from the start with Houdy, the manager showing you around the camp and introducing you to the surf instructions, staff, and other guests and from there you are part of this wonderful family. Since, the place is so engaging the guests cannot help but also engage with each other and the "Swell Surf Family" is born. After the 7am daily surf lesson, the best part, after catching some waves, is you come back "home" to enjoy a beautifully prepared breakfast from the chefs. The large communal table fosters an engaging meal with your instructions and other guests, Also, there is a family dinners 4x's a week and more friendships are made. With your new friends and family you also can enjoy the beautiful grounds and pool, yoga, day-trips, some crazy nights out...and most importantly some unforgettable memories. Swell is perfectly situated in Cabarete and a stone's throw to Gordito's - my personal favorite restaurant. The food will get you there but the Sangria and smiles is what keeps me going back. It's my own personal mission to bring every new guest there for a Sangria or Margarita. Swell is also located within a short walking distance to beautiful beaches, shopping, and great nightlife. So as you can see this place really does has everything. It can accommodate all different age ranges and social-economic stages. As a 43 year old and financially secure person, I have left my back-packing/hostel days behind me as a fond memory, which was my initial reason for choosing Swell, as they have brilliantly planned the property to accommodate all budgets and life stages. See you there soon!!!
No Exaggeration: this place is awesome!
These people are not exaggerating on how fun this place is in the other reviews. I was here for about 3 weeks. I was not sure what to expect out of Cabarete or the DR really. I could not have imagined that it would be so great. The people I met there, both the staff and the other guests were wonderful. There was always some surf for any level of surfer. So that is no problem. Socially, although as guests were from incredibly disparate backgrounds, we really got along well. I have not been to a "surf camp" before but I am absolutely looking forward to booking my trip again. It was so fun to be around others who loved the water as much as me. I just haven't had that experience as an adult. The food was awesome. Breakfast everyday and four nights a week a dinner was included. The surf instructors were fun and patient; big props to Scott, Dan and Neno! Howdie was the on site manager and she did everything she could to keep us happy and comfortable. It was pretty awesome. If you've even thought about a surf trip once, then you should book this. Water is warm, people are cool. If you don't want to surf on a particular day, you can just chill at the camp. Easy.
Incredible Vacation!
Amazing experience! This was my first solo vacation, and I was a little hesitant booking the trip when I had never surfed, didn't know any one else, and was staying in the dorm room. My initial concerns vanished upon arriving at Swell, and I'm so glad I just booked it. I met a variety of fantastic people and miss them already! The camp is set up in a way that is naturally very social and relaxing, with great communal areas. The dorms are clean and comfortable and the food is delicious. I felt safe the entire time and it was nice having transportation taken care of. The surfing instructors were fantastic, knowledgeable and provided 1:1 coaching. I was standing on the board within the first few days and loved watching the sun rise in the early sessions. As others mentioned, the schedule is fantastic with two surf sessions and a home cooked breakfast in the morning, followed by optional activities and time to relax by the pool in the afternoon. The yoga was a perfect post-surf activity. We went out for several meals in Cabarete and I enjoyed the company and beach-side dining. I hope to return one day and highly recommend Swell!
Amazing, Amazing, Amazing
Swell is such a lovely place - Cabarete is a really fun town to stay in so coupled with the tranquility of Swell it is a fantastic balance and has something for everyone. The food was amazing and the staff were really helpful, friendly and very very funny. The surf instruction accounted for all levels so no one struggled and everyone had a great time - I cannot recommend it enough!
AWESOME Experience
I just got back from Swell last night and I wish I didn't have to leave. It was an amazing trip. Haudy, who runs the place day to day is amazing. Everything is so organized and you are treated so well. She has Swell running like clockwork. It's like being part of a small family when you are there. The instructors, Dan, Scott and Nano were great and definitely knew what they were doing. They were great guys. The meals that were made for us 4 nights a week at the hotel were phenomenal. I had a private room which was very nice and comfortable. There was no TV which was great. If you wanted access to wifi it was available in the common area, which is where you really gathered most of the time when you weren't surfing or out at the beach, eating, getting a message or shopping. The area is safe and the property is extremely safe. I can't recommend Swell enough!!!! My only regret was not being able to stay longer.
Will come back again next year!
Perfect for beginners, casual surfers and pros alike. You get to meet amazing people that you will probably be friends with for life. The camp is clean, safe, competitively priced and just downright super chill. Cabarete has beautiful beaches and amazing surfing without the busyness/seediness of a bigger city. You can also book different activities through the camp, I recommend doing Canyoning for the more adventurous types. The staff were great, from the mechanic, the cooks, cleaners and even the quiet security guard that comes by at night. Hauli, the manager, is super sweet and will take care of whatever needs you have. And the surf instructors (Dan, Scott and Neno) are super chill and very encouraging! I've surfed in a bunch of camps before and this is the best yet. I Highly Recommend it!
Probably the best experience I've had - JUST BOOK IT DONT HESITATE
I'm a 27 y/o from London and came on my own arriving on New Years Eve for 10 nights. Words really can't do this place justice. It was probably the best decision I've made in years to come here. The facilities are fantastic, all the staff are great and the food is superb. If your a beginner, intermediate or advanced, this is a great place for you to come. Although arriving on my own, I left with a group of friends who I'll know for a long time. There was a review I read saying ' don't hesitate, just book it' and I can't agree more. It took me 20 hours to get there (last minute flight) and 30 hours back ( weather issues in New York) and it was still worth it all. Make sure you bring some things from home to leave there as it will feel like the right thing to do when you leave. Extra thanks to Scott and Lee/ Gee/Nee /Meemo as they're the glue holding it all together. Stay safe and enjoy it!
